Layla Braved the Shave for Her Dad
"I did it all for my dad. I know the money we raise means more children won't have to lose their dads to cancer, and more families can stay together making happy memories"
At just 14 years old, Layla lost her dad, Ruddyard "Reggie", to oesophageal cancer. Four years later, on her 18th birthday, she chose to honour his memory in an unforgettable way. Before taking the final shave herself, she divided her hair into 18 sections, one for each year of her life, and invited 17 of the people closest to her, including her mum, brother and two family friends undergoing cancer treatment, to each shave a section.
Rather than receiving birthday presents, Layla asked her family and friends to donate to cancer research instead. Together, they raised more than $5,000 to help fund life-saving cancer research.
Layla's Brave Shave was more than a fundraiser, it was a heartfelt tribute to her dad and a commitment to helping create a future where fewer families experience the heartbreak.
