I am taking part in ACRF's 2km a Day in May challenge to help raise essential funds for lifesaving cancer research.

Every day in May, I will be moving for 3kms or more in support of the 2 in 5 Australians who will face a cancer diagnosis by the age of 85.

By committing to support brilliant cancer research, we can help to transform the way we prevent, detect and treat ALL types of cancer.

It's Easy for Me ...

On my walk this morning I reflected on how easy it really is for me to complete the 3kms per day I set as my target.  Many factors contribute to this including:
*. I am healthy with no regular pain.
*. my beautiful dog is so keen to walk , she is a great motivator.
*. the weather is pretty good , not too hot or cold.  If it rains I have an umbrella. 
*. my town has some really good walking tracks beside our beautiful river...a very pleasant place to walk. 
*. we also have a walking track behind my street which goes for around 4kms return.  
* I work part time,  and start late enough that I have time for a morning walk. 
I also thought about my patients who have cancer.  Many of them would struggle with, or not be able to , complete the 3kms per day.  For many reasons, including:
*. the fatigue they feel as a side effect of their cancer treatment,  and from the stress of it.
*. the bone pain that is a side effect of so many cancer medications.
*. the loss of strength and fitness from months of treatment,  the accumulation of side effects and from just not being able to be as active as usual.
*. the nausea, or fear of being physically sick whilst out for a walk.  This also contributes to low energy and loss of muscle , from not getting enough nutrition.
*. being so exhausted from just getting through the everyday chores and activities that there is no energy left for a walk. 
*. the loss of energy and muscle bulk from the cancer itself.
*. time- so many medical appointments,  especially for country people who have to also factor in travelling long distances or being away from home for weeks at a time. 
As you can see,  people with cancer face additional challenges to exercising than most people.   Many of the challenges are side effects or results of treatments.  A lot of my work is helping patients to build up their strength and fitness during and  after cancer treatment.  The good news is that exercise reduces most of the side effects and allows people to enjoy a better quality of life . 
We need clever people to keep doing brilliant research into cancer treatments-  to make them better at treating cancer and to cure cancers which don't currently have cures....but also to make them less detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the people receiving them .  That is why I'm fundraising for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation- they fund brilliant research.
